1.3 Diagnosis
1.3.1 A diagnosis of ADHD should only be made by a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional with training and expertise in the diagnosis of ADHD, on the basis of:
• a full clinical and psychosocial assessment of the person; this should include discussion about behaviour and symptoms in the different domains and settings of the person’s everyday life and
• a full developmental and psychiatric history and
• observer reports and assessment of the person’s mental state.
Within the NHS most diagnoses of ADHD are in fact made by Clinical Nurse specialists. Clinicians working in our Clinic have originally come from the NHS and in addition, our service is independently regulated by the NHS (NHS Healthcare Improvement Scotland) and approved to assess, diagnose and treat ADHD
We also prescribe, monitor medication, and share care with NHS General Practitioners; and we also accept the care of patients from other services (that may only assess but not prescribe for patients – such as Psychologists and many other private clinicians) However, also remember your GP doesn’t need to share care with any private providers (regardless of the speciality), No NHS GPs do, and although the majority of our Patients do have shared care with their GPs, there is still a significant number whose GPs decline and that is their choice to do that
