I have often said that having ADHD makes everything a little more intense. Whether those moments are positive or negative, they are often experienced more strongly than by others. A bump in someone else’s day can be a car crash in yours. And when you are in a relationship, the emotional impact of such crashes can extend beyond you and affect your partner. It is a fact that those with ADHD have a higher risk of breakups and divorce. This is not because of carelessness or a lack of love, but because ADHD directly affects how relationships function. Emotional regulation, communication, and everyday responsibilities can all become challenging.

People with ADHD often struggle with everyday tasks, and adding the needs of a partner into the mix can sometimes increase the strain rather than relieve it. That doesn’t mean relationships are doomed. It means they require awareness, honesty, and good intention.

I also find that many with ADHD struggle to know when to let go. Love can become so intense that walking way feels impossible, even when staying is harmful. The depth of your love convinces you that leaving must be wrong. But there is power in letting go. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do – for yourself and for someone else – is to release what no longer serves either of you.
