Exercising consistently with ADHD has always been a hurdle for me. No matter how motivated I felt at the start, maintaining momentum was the real challenge. It is frustrating, especially in an age where social media constantly presents perfect physiques. Sometimes it can feel impossible to get to the gym, let alone train properly. And that is only one part of it. The other is the diet. How do I balance structured nutrition, consistent training, work, relationships, and everything else that life demands without burning out?

At different points in life, I have managed to pour everything into the gym. But when I did that, other areas in my life suffered. I could be disciplined in one domain, but not across all of them. For me, the answer I came across after years of trying was surprisingly simple: goals. Not vague goals, like put on muscle or get lean. Those were never enough to keep my attention. ADHD thrives on urgency and clear end points. The most effective goal I have found is joining a sport.

I had been trying to build muscle for years. Progress was slow and inconsistent. Then I committed to a mixed martial arts training camp. During that period, I put on more muscle than I ever had before. Furthermore, I wasn’t forcing myself to go to the gym with the same internal pressure as before.

The difference wasn’t effort, but it was structure. Energy from my coach. The purpose behind each session. The fixed date of the fight. The external accountability. Everything pointed towards something concrete.

In short, training for performance will always be more effective than training for aesthetic when you have ADHD.
