Something many people with ADHD will relate to is the fear that their partner won’t understand their feelings when they try to communicate them. Most of the time, that fear or anxiety about explaining myself ends up causing the exact reaction I was afraid of in the first place. I try so hard, and it still feels like I’m not enough sometimes, and that’s a horrible feeling to sit with.
The truth is, if you’re struggling to communicate and you think you’re a burden because you have ADHD, that has less to do with you and more to do with your partner and the relationship as a whole. You are not less because you have ADHD, and you shouldn’t be made to feel that way. That’s not me saying it’s automatically your partner’s fault, either — life has so many variables. Not everyone signs up for a partner with ADHD, and that’s just the truth of it. At the end of the day, we don’t choose who we fall in love with, but it’s still our job to be caring and patient on both ends.
