Many times, I have heard this phrase: ‘ADHD and alcohol don’t mix.’ But I don’t think that is true. Not entirely.
For me, alcohol used to be quite a tricky slope, especially when I first started drinking. A couple drinks used to make me either embarrass myself or act out of line. They also made me very sad at times. I was never one to cry in front of my friends, but after a few I’d normally melt down. Small things would grow in my head. A small remark from another person would be received as a knife to the heart. In high school, I got on quite well with everyone, but when I finally made friends and got invited out, it became apparent that I was a burden when I drank. I would fall over, become non-verbal, and be the one who needed help home.
In all honesty, I became a better drinker by stepping away for a long time and coming back to it with a better head on myself. Another factor that effected my relationship with alcohol was my emotional intelligence. When I came back with a better understanding of myself, and who I want to become, it became much easier.
I don’t believe that drinking is the end of the world for those with ADHD. Our reaction to it is different than most people, but with experience and a level head, I’m sure you’ll have as good a time as everyone else.
